My mom's retired.
She lives in a 2 story house around 45 miles from mine.
She had knee replacement surgeries, so she doesn't like using stairs much.
She spends her days on her computer, chatting with her friends, listening to music, and reading the news.
She also likes to watch TV, but can't afford cable nor satellite TV subscriptions.
Her choices are internet streaming services, and free OTA TV.
Netflix at $10 per month, and free YouTube are her internet streaming service choices.
She was using a rabbit ears antenna for OTA TV, which picked up 2 channels, neither in a language she understood.
I set up a good 25 mile antenna on her 2nd floor.
This antenna connects to a Tablo Dual OTA DVR with a 2TB hard drive.
The Tablo connects wirelessly to her router, which is on the 1st floor.
She uses a Roku wirelessly, and watches Netflix, and YouTube, and OTA TV.
It's a great setup.
Only problem is the Tablo is on the 2nd floor.
What if it hangs, and you need to power cycle it?
My mom can't easily go up and down stairs anymore.
A WeMo controls the power to the Tablo.
She doesn't have an Android Tablet, nor a smartphone.
IFTTT controls the WeMo via e-mail messages.
If the Tablo needs to be power cycled, she sends an e-mail, and it's done.
I'm a good son.
She told me so.
Bummer that the Wemo Insight's default is power off after a power outage.
IFTTT to the rescue!
I set up 2 IFTTT rules:
1. When WeMo is powered off, power it on.
2. When WeMo enters standby state, power it on.
Works nicely. :-)
