Wemo light switch -powers on but doesn’t control light

I have installed several wemo light switches in my house. They have all worked fine. I installed one this morning in my basement that will control several can lights. The old switch had a black, red, white and a neutral. I connected it as I have the others and turned power back on. The switch itself seems to power on. I can add it to the wemo app. When I turn it off or on at the switch or through the app and it “clicks”. However, the lights do not come on. Any ideas?

Do you have two light switches interconnected for those lights (top and bottom of stairway)? If so, unless things have changed regarding Wemo Switches the dual switch wiring is not supported.

No. It’s not a three way

Confirm your hot and neutral with a multimeter. I wonder what the spare wire is for if not dual switch control.

If it's a two way switch, you should be able to convert to s certain extent. NOTE! you seem to have an extra white wire - so my concern is that you have a 3way switch, or something like that.

A two way switch is wired thus:

             o-----Black-----o

            /                 \

Black -----o                   o----- Black

             o------Red------o          LIGHT

White ------------------------------- White

You would want to convert to:

                /

Black ---+-----o   o-----------+----- black

         |                     |        LIGHT

white -+-C-----o---------------C----- white

       | |                     |

       | |          /          |

       | +--Black--o   o--Red--+

       |

       +----white--o

The "problem" is that both switches have to be off to turn off the light - but you can do that with a long press rule on both switches.

Alternately, just disconnect the red in first diagram at both switches, and bypass the none-wemo switch with the black.

It would be far nicer if you could slave (mirror) the second switch to the first, that way you wouldn't need the red at all, you would just cap it.

I’m note sure why the extra wire. There is not a third switch associated with this.

If there is a staircase going down stair by code there must be a switch at the top and bottom for the basement lights or stairwell lights.
