Wiring a Wemo Light Switch with GFCI - GFI question

[ Edited ]

What if I ran 14/3 (black, red, white, copper) from my fuse box to an electrical box

At GFCI

Connect white to load neutral terminal

Connect black to load power terminal

Connect red to light

Connect ground to ground

At Wemo

Connect white to white

Connect black to red

Connect black to black

Connect ground to ground

Would this retain GFCI functionality?

[ Edited ]

I wired my Wemo as described above and it worked like a charm. I can now control my LED pool lights from the Wemo switch, Wemo App and from my Alexa.

Loving this setup!

Re: Wiring a Wemo with GFCI question (resolved)

Good stuff.  Note this isn't a GFCI thing.  What you've done is move the wemo to a box away from where the load is connected, running the power out through the black and back through the red.  Works fine whether it's a conventional or GFCI circuit.

You didn't mention it, but note that the white has to be connected from the GFCI (or conventional breaker) to both to the load AND the WEMO lines.  And the ground is still aboslutely NOT optional in a GFCI circuit!

Re: Wiring a Wemo with GFCI question (resolved)

I thought the description and picture helped specify that the white wire must be connected to the GFCI but I guess it's better to call it out. I also edited my post removing ground as optional.

This may be a conventional installation but I spent hours researching this, gave up and packed up the Wemo for return. I even purchased a competing product in an attempt to resolve the GFCI issue. I finally figured it out and it was very simple.

Oh, you wired directly from your panel and then used a pig tail inside the panel for the red to pump black?  I don't know if that's allowed by the electrical code (I'm not an electrician), you might want to get it inspected.

Another choice, perhaps easier depending where you put the wemo box and certainly to code, would have been a 14-2 from the GFCI to the wemo box, and moving the load 14-2 from the panel to the wemo box where you would wire it as a typical switch.

Yes, I connected from within the electrical box directly to the GFCI (GFI) but not with a pigtail. 14/3 contains 4 wires, white, red, black and ground. Ground is ground, white is neutral and the red and black break the feed. Straight forward.

At GFCI

Connect white to load neutral terminal

Connect black to load power terminal

Connect red to pool light

Connect ground to ground

At Wemo

Connect white to white

Connect black to red

Connect black to black

Connect ground to ground

Sorry, I expect you've done this, but someone else trying your answer may not understand and a clarifcation may prevent anyone getting hurt (for example, missing that that the wemo black must come from the GFCI rather than the load).  After wiring it it's important to test that the GFCI "test" button removes power from the wemo and the light.

At GFCI:

Connect GFCI white to load neutral terminal

Connect GFCI black to load power terminal

*Connect red (from wemo) to pool light BLACK (this isn't pigtailed?)

*Connect WHITE from wemo to neutral terminal

*Connect WHITE from pool light to neutral terminal

*Connect BLACK from wemo to GFCI LOAD terminal

Connect ground to ground
